Kings of Leon's Come Around Sundown Is My Def Leppard's Hysteria

And my Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant and even Slaughter. When I was around 11 or 12, these bands meant more to me than anything from Velvet Underground, Television, or even U2 (Thank you Guns N' Roses and later Nirvana). But, None the less, I loved the music these bands were making and more importantly how it was making me feel. At the time, music was the escape from the from the turmoil around me. You throw on Open Up And Say Ahh and tell me your not in a good mood. Obviously as I grew so did my taste which brings me to Kings of Leon. When Youth and Young Manhood came out, in my opinion, music was peaking again and the substance and sound was becoming more important than the image. Kings were one of the bands that I dug instantly, I was drawn in with what I considered Allman Brothers mixed with a gritty 70's garage sound, but once again I saw something coming and the change was about to hit again. While interning at CMJ, I got a copy of Because of the Times for review and was so pumped to hear it. My first reaction was that it's only a matter of time until this band is selling out Madison Square Garden. Low and behold my prediction was correct and as we all know, the Kings are now huge pop stars, loved by millions and hated by equal. I was one of the latter, I couldn't believe all the slick, overproduced,more chains and fire in their videos then the worst Motley Crue videos from the 80's, band they had become over the course of a tour and one more album. You know what though? Come Around Sundown is a perfect combination of what I consider to be the two sides of Kings of Leon. I stopped judging them for what I believed to be selling out, and just let the music do to me what music should. It has everything a good old rock record should have... Big songs, big personality, and the right amount of cheesiness to remind you of why good music is good music and why we all connect to it. By the way, Nobody in any band would say "Fuck Off" if they could be playing in front of 20,000 people a night, if they do, guess what? It's Bullshit...... Except maybe Cobain.

I find it so amazing every time I listen to this album how much better it gets and how everything else i listen to falls in comparison and sounds fake. The sheer genius off the arraignments are enough to stand by those comments already, but when you add in the exquisite vocals that are flowing from Van's soul, the album takes you on a slow ride, in a place that can be as magical as you allow it to be... This record is on all the Greatest Lists, and for good reason. Each track is its own story and its told with pure, free-flying space-folk. I would love to have been inside Van's head for about 8 minutes while these songs were appearing to him..... If you have never heard this album before, treat yourself....

Every now and then a piece of music comes out that just makes everything else sound weak and manufactured, and this my friends is one of those records. Dylan Fest 2010 @ Bowery Ballroom

New York City hosted a birthday bash at the Bowery Ballroom for one of its most famous implanted poet's, Mr.Bob Dylan. The All-Star cast, each of which took a shot at capturing the aura that is Robert Zimmerman, could not have been better. Jesse Malin ripped through a manic version of "From A Buick 6," that led way to a beautifully haunting version of "Girl From The North Country" Performed by Sean Lennon. The highlight of the show by far was provided by Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis' hysterical, yet powerful version of "You Ain't Going Nowhere." Oh by the way, even though they weren't on stage, it was nice to walk through the crowd a see every member of the Strokes together, sans Julian of course....

Shara Worden Set To Shine Bright In NYC

After lending her angelic voice to acts such as the Decemberists and David Byrne, Shara Worden will be bringing My Brightest Diamond back to New York City. On January 22 the band will be playing the Bowery Ballroom in support of their new remix album Shark Remixes. The record, which will be officially released on 1/26, will be avalible at the show. Shark Remixes, will offer fresh takes on the groups 2008 album A Thousand Shark's Teeth. Artists Alfred Brown, DM Stith, Son Lux and Roberto Carlos Lange were all brought in to create their own versions of the albums music while keeping Wordens soaring voice as the centerpeice.

Harper Simon Review

On his debut album, Harper Simon, the son of legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon has created an album that dear ol' dad would be proud of. Famous offspring usually don't take this long to put out their own music, but after a few years in the band Menlo Park, the 37 year old Harper thought it was time to strike out on his own and use the last name that so many are familiar with. Although it's hard to listen to the record and not be swept away with the voice that sounds eerily similar to Paul's, the effort shows a man who knows a thing or two about music himself. The albums foundation was laid down in Nashville with a host of session musicians that included Elvis Presley's bassist Mike Leech and guitarist Al Perkins. After those sessions were complete Harper went to New York to finish the album with producer Tom Rothrock, who has lent his talents to a host of musical minds most notably Elliott Smith. In fact, The track "Shooting Star," sounds like something Elliott would have came up with if his mind wasn't so clouded with drugs and depression. Harper also enlisted a group of famous friends to round the album out including Aaron Espinoza, another child of rock royalty, Sean Lennon, and even Poppa Paul contribute to the discs concrete foundation. Even when some of the lyrics are not at there strongest, the country twang, comforting folk, and elegantly strummed acoustics hold the songs together like crazy-glue. It will be hard for Harper to be mentioned without something about Paul following, but this album proves that you can take the gifts that were passed down to you and make something beautiful and significant without sounding like a carbon copy.

Steven Tyler, Frontman for one of the most beloved American bands of all time Aerosmith has called it quits after three decades with the band. Joe Perry said he had had difficulty confirming this with Tyler because the singer doesn’t return his phone calls. “He’s notorious for that,” Perry told The Sun. “That’s one thing I’ve learned to live with. I try to overlook it.” As of now it looks as though Tyler will concentrate on a solo career telling British Music Mag 'Classic Rock," I don’t know what I’m doing yet,” he went on to add, “but it’s definitely going to be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself - Brand Tyler.” I have not really understood Aerosmith and what the band has been doing since the release of Get A Grip, but I do hope that they realize that Steven pretty much was the band and they should not mess with the rep they have already begun to destroy with the garbage the band has been churning out since 1999. Hey Joe Perry, just focus on your solo stuff and please don't try to tour and promote anything with the Aerosmith name, It would just come across as weak and desperate.

Album of The Weekend - Alberta Cross - Broken Side Of Time

If Alberta Cross isn't your new favorite band yet, then just give their new album Broken Side Of Time a few listens and you'll be humming their tunes in a matter of no time. The band mixes the grandiosity and space-rock of the Verve , with the roots rock stylings of My Morning Jacket (singer Petter Ericson Stakee is a dead ringer for Jim James) and Neil Young with or without Crazy Horse. The album is drenched in throbbing bass lines that lay the foundation for the haunting guitar riffs that follow from track to track. Stakee was listening to a lot of Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, and the darker side of Depeche Mode while writing the songs for the record, and those influences shine brightly throughout. "Taking Control," sounds like it could have been an outtake off of My Morning Jacket's sonic infused Z, while the title track could have been slipped in during Rust Never Sleeps sessions and not many would notice. All in all, Alberta Cross aren't breaking any new boundaries on this disc, but they prove that they get the path that was laid out for them and follow it perfectly.

This Frontier Needs Heroes Album Review

For some reason the words I am searching for to start this review will not come easy, and I have decided that's because everything about This Frontier Needs Heroes self titled album is difficult. Now, do not be turned off, please do read on because everyone of the 10 tracks is a little orgasm for your mind and ears. When I say difficult, I mean it is an album that is drenched in self reflection, so much so that is forces the listener to take a small peak inward which as we all know is not always the easiest thing to do. The Heroes, which is the brother/sister duo Brad and Jessica Lauretti, communicate their tales through haunting folk, rustic Americana, roots rock, and REAL blues by splattering them all over the album. The first track is a perfect example of the loathing that Brad is going through trying to find inner peace with the opening line, "How do I get this hatred out of my heart, how do I get this madness out of my mind." The duo enlists the help of Ivan Berko (bass), T.K. Webb (electric guitar), Tomchess (flute), and Gian Luca Zanin (violin) to create the perfect landscape and foundation for the Lauretti's angelic voices to soar to new heights. The two stand out songs are the one-two punch of "No More War," and "You Humble Me." The first is a rocking barn-burner with Grateful Dead inspired solo's and infectious hand claps, while the latter combines beautifully plucked acoustic guitars, banjo, and violin with Jessica's gorgeous background vocals. After his work with previous bands, The Pony Express and The Mountain Men, it sounds like the secret weapon Brad had been searching for to allow his music to really shine was none other than his sister. The next time your fumbling around for something to ease the transition from the party winding down and daylight creeping in, you would be hard pressed to find a better companion then This Frontier Needs Heroes.

So, this whole thing with Micheal Jackson has really been tugging at my heart strings for various different reasons..... First off, When I was a kid, Thriller was the first record in this huge collection that my mom had that I could say was MINE.... I wanted to be MJ so bad when I was a kid, it's making me laugh typing this now as I think of the whitest white boy trying to Moonwalk, I had the white sequence glove, the red leather jacket, the doll ( in all the outfits).. you get the point.... The man was like no other... he transcended race, religion, and culture, all the while remaining a peaceful, loving, kick ass entertainer.... I can sit here and say with no convictions, that he was my generation's Elvis..... and I stand by that with all my being...... The second reason is the music...Playing so much over the last couple of days, it has really made me think of being a little boy and my mom would always have some amazing music on while she cooked dinner, be it the Beatles, Hot Tuna, Bruce, The dead, but she would always play my Thriller album for me.......My mom died suddenly and completely unexpectedly 11 months ago, ( YEAH I KNOW ..... VIOLINS ARE PLAYING FOR ME) but all the talk of coroners, pills, pain and all that jive has stirred up an emotion that can really damage the soul, mind, and spirit... It had it's grip on me once already, but it's slowly fading and life is taking it course once again, or maybe I'm just deciding to take a part in it again... But as I sit here with P.Y.T. blasting a brief smile crosses my face, it's better than running speed trials standing in place.......

I Still Love Dave Matthews Band Damn It

So I have been a huge Dave fan since around 95, and I have seen this band grow from underground kings to a full blown product. For years, I would travel to see this band, no place too far, averaging 15 shows a year. They were the band that opened me up to so many different genres of music and I'm not ashamed to admit that I would have never been into the amazing music styling of John Denver or even the master John Coltrane. My life from 95 to about 2000 can be set to the songs off of their earlier works (Under the table and Dreaming, Crash, even up to Before these Crowded Streets) but as the band got bigger and I got older, I started to drift away from the band while they crept towards the commercial masses in the shitty music industry. I had always had a couple of tunes here and there off of the albums that came to follow, with the exception of Busted Stuff (which will always fall in comparison to the famed "Lillywhite Sessions") but for the most part, I was disgusted with what the band (machine) was churning out. That all changed the other night when I listened to Big Whisky and the Groogrux King. For the first time in years, the band sent goosebumps up my spine with an album that has reconfirmed what I had thought all throughout my late teens and early twenties, This is the greatest American rock and roll band to date.... I know many will argue that, but instrument for instrument, I challenge you to show me a better musician at their position... As much as I hate the Yankees, I will compare DMB to them, When you have the money and an All star at every position, the only result can be greatness....... In 2006 the Walkmen paid homage to Harry Nilsson and John Lennon's drug and booze-filled "Lost Weekend" by covering their 1974 release Pussy Cats. Those sessions have clearly carried over into You And Me, the fourth album from the gritty New Yorkers. A perfect example of this can be found in the waltzy, bare-boned fuzz of "In the New Year." Singer Hamilton Leithauser admits he's "still living at the old address," but the Walkmen have obviously taken a step forward musically without sacrificing any of the attitude or emotion that propelled them in the first place.

Songs like "New Year," "On The Water" and "I Lost You" sound like they could be found playing on the jukebox of a run-down, sleazy bar an hour before closing time. The opening track, "Donde Esta La Playa," grabs your full attention with its bass-heavy, drum-circle vibe and doesn't let go until the final note is played. Most notable is the way the band has infused string and brass instruments with vintage pianos to their signature lo-fi sound. The result sounds like someone took Bob Dylan, Lou Reed circa Rock And Roll and Tom Waits, then locked them in a recording studio for two weeks with nothing but alcohol and cigarettes. Everyone in the band contributes to make this album the most intriguing and polished effort from the guys so far, but no one shines brighter than drummer Matt Barrick, who hasn't sounded this tight since his days with Jonathon Fire*Eater. Next time you're fumbling around at five in the morning for an album to put on to sooth your wild night, you would be hard pressed to find a better companion than You And Me.

Axl Rose came out of hiding again to give his second official interview since the release of the long (hahahha) awaited new Guns N' Roses album Chinese Democracy. Rose spoke with Spinner.com about Slash, the media, and other rants we have come to love and expect over the years. I personally love Axl and the new GNR album, I find him to be a true and tortured artist, but this man is 100% insane.

To lump the Giraffes into one genre would be difficult if not downright impossible. On Prime Motivator, their fourth full-length, the Brooklyn-based rockers return with an album littered with stoner rock riffs, thunderous punk drumming and slick surf rock melodies. Vocalist Aaron Lazar, who suffers from a heart condition which forced him to have a defibrillator implanted, sings with such grit and intensity that you're afraid the machine could be set off and shock him at any moment. On the title-track, Lazar speaks of his experiences with the infliction through lyrics such as, "I don't feel so fine/when the machine makes up it's mind," and, "If you want to try/this machine of mine/have a friend slam a crowbar into your chest/every time that you think you'll be catching your breath, then slam your heart into your spine." The track, "Done," is an instant rock classic that combines a nasty Zeppelin-like guitar riff with Lazar's snide vocals, all drenched and dripping with distortion. The song, "Honest Man," with its sprawling bass lines and space rock infused vibe, sounds like it could have been plucked right off of Hawkwind's 1972 live recording, Space Ritual Volume 2.

The album includes guest appearances by Jessie "The Devil" Hughes and Melissa Auf Der Mar, and was produced at the legendary Rancho De La Luna Studios in Joshua Tree, CA by Dave Catching, who has lent his magical touch to acts such as Queens Of The Stone Age, Eagles Of Death Metal and the Mark Lanegan Band. Prime Motivator is a perfect example of a band taking the manic energy and raw intensity of their live shows with them into the studio and coming out with a fist-pumping, bong ripping masterpiece.
